Cultural celebrations: coming of age

Hindi coming of age ceremony for girls starts when she gets her menstruation. However, before the celebrating can begin the girl must undergo a week of staying in her room. She can not see any males or be in contact with them for if she is she will get pimples. Also she must only eat dishes containing vegetables. After a week of staying in her room and nine days after her menstruation there is a Turmeric Bathing ceremony. This ceremony lasts for nine days and nights. For those days and nights the girl is the centre of attention and is given gifts and kind words from their family and friends. After the ceremony the girl is no longer a girl and is now a woman.
